Computing

Computing

Computing is a compulsory subject for Years 7, 8 and 9 at FHS.

The girls have one double period of Computing each week throughout the year. GCSE Computer Science is also offered to Year 10 and Year 11 and, from 2017, Francis Holland will also offer A-Level Computer Science.

Computing is comprised of three separate elements. The first is ICT, which  explores how computers work and how we use them to communicate. The second, Digital Literacy, develops an understanding of how to use data from different sources and evaluate them for reliability and bias. The construction and development of new media are also covered as part of digital literacy. The final strand of computing is Computer Science, which is a very large subject with many of applications. Computer scientists design new software, solve computing problems and develop different ways to use technology

Key Stage 3

The Department offers a stimulating curriculum in Years 7, 8 and 9, which provides many opportunities for enrichment. Girls learn how to code using a visual language and two text based languages. Girls learn to evaluate computer code and both create their own and manipulate pre-existing code. During Key Stage 3 girls also learn to create videos using video editing software, learn about data and how to utilise it most effectively in addition to learning the inner working of the machines they use so frequently. The ICT strand of Computing allows girls to explore how to use common software packages and become fluent in their usage, preparing them for the world and further study.

Key Stage 4 - GCSE Computer Science

At Key Stage 4, we follow OCR GCSE Computer Science (9-1) (J275) which offer breadth of subject knowledge from networking concepts, computational thinking, creating algorithms and programming languages. Girls are assessed via two examinations and one controlled assessment element, which is allocated by the exam board. The course offers an existing view into the inner workings of the computer system and allows girls and insight into a truly extraordinary machine.

Key Stage 5 - A level Computer Science

From September 2017, we will offer girls the change to undertake the linear OCR Computer Science syllabus (H447). The A Level is a far more in depth view into the inner workings of computer system and aims to allow girls to start on the path to becoming competent programmers and developers. The theoretical elements of the course are demanding but exciting and fascinating. There is an element of Mathematics within the course and this is utilised at various stages.

Resources

The Computing Department is comprised of three purpose built computer rooms with the latest SMART technology and projection equipment. The Department has links with local universities as well as technology business which allows us the opportunity to work with some industry experts and provide guest speakers for the girls. We also offer visits to technology companies for the older girls as and when necessary.
